Being a Mature Aged Dad

I have hit 50 but I don't feel it. In fact, with four little ones running around I often feel 20, but then again, at the end of the day, I often feel 60.

What really annoys me though are the assumptions that people make. Being a family, we often go out together. Shopping, lunch or just down to the park.

Everything is fines until someone looks down at the baby and says how gorgeous she looks (and she does), and then comments "how I must be a very proud granddad". (grrrr).

When we arrived at the hospital for the birth of a last child, we were met by the midwife who said how nice it was to have the granddad there, would the father be arriving soon. (grrr).

I guess it is a simple enough mistake to make but you should see some of the looks I get when I correct their mistakes. I suppose I do look old enough to be the granddad - I am old enough, but I am also vain enough to think I look a little younger than my real age. My wife is twenty odd years younger than me and she gets even stranger looks. I thought it was accepted in our society. Perhaps not - unless your rich or a movie/pop star.

But you know something? I couldn't give a you know what. We are happy! And after all, as a family, thats all that matters. No matter what is happening in the world, being a part of a family is so rewarding - if you look for it and accept it.

Better Late Than Never

Yes, I'm 51 and have a 5-year old daughter. I've certainly received the same grandfather references but I just matter-of-factly respond that she's my daughter and I move on. It would have been nice to be a dad earlier on in my life but I'm sure glad I'm having the opportunity to experience this even now.
