Getting The Right Baby Bedding

by Mark Walters

Shopping for baby bedding can be a fun experience, but many people also find it a bit overwhelming because there are so many choices and they are not sure which items they need and which of the many sub-types of those items are best. If you find yourself being overwhelmed, then you need to get back to basics, and remember that the only really important thing to consider is whether what you are buying is safe for your baby. So long as an item of baby bedding is safe, then it is a good item to buy.

The crib is the most important item of baby bedding. You need to get one that is well made and sturdy and which does not have any rough or sharp edges on it. The bars on it should be wide enough apart for your baby not to be able to get their arms or legs trapped. You will have to buy more than one crib for your baby's early years because they will soon outgrow the first one that you buy.

Inside the crib you need bumpers and blankets. Bumpers are necessary to prevent your baby banging themselves against the sides of the crib, so you will need four of them. They should be able to be firmly attached to the sides of the crib as otherwise they can fall inwards should your baby pull on them. In terms of thickness, they do not need to be more than half an inch.

The blankets that you use should be appropriate your home's temperature. If you buy polyester blankets you may find that they make your baby too warm. Likewise, you may find that acrylic cellular blankets are not a good choice. Cotton is the best choice of materials for baby blankets. As a general guide, a warm room (approximately 75 degrees) will require one sheet. Then, for every drop of 5 degrees, you should add another baby blanket.

Both the blankets and the bumpers that you buy will need to be changed every couple of days, so you should buy at least a couple of sets of all items. Buying machine washable baby bedding will save you a lot of time. As for the washing itself, be sure to only use washing powder that is for babies and / or people with sensitive skin. If you use cheap washing powder then your baby's skin may become red and itchy because of the use of certain chemicals in it.

As for the colors and designs of the baby bedding items that you buy, you can really just use your imagination. There is no need to spend hours finding the cutest items (unless of course you want to) because your baby will not have any idea of whether their bed looks nice or not. So long as it safe, comfortable, clean and the right temperature, they will be happy.

The Effects of Childhood Anxiety

Being afraid and anxious at certain times during childhood has always been considered a normal phase of growing up.   Now, it is a fact that anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental disorders faced by children and adolescents.  Although it may seem a little extreme to jump from feeling fear to having an anxiety disorder, think about the results - if fear and anxiety are experienced to a pathological degree, then it could lead to severe depression and suicide.  Additionally, an untreated childhood disorder is pretty certain to lead to an adult mental disorder.

Everyone feels fearful and anxious at various times in their lives and children are certainly no exception.  In fact, without fear, we probably wouln't be here as it is an essential survival mechanism.    When it comes to children, that childhood fear of the dark, apprehension in new situations like starting school and separation anxiety are all natural fears when they are temporary.    It is when the fear becomes a permanent emotion which impacts on normal activities that there is a possible development of an anxiety disorder.

Parents or caretakers should become concerned when a child loses the willingness to push the boundaries just a little.   To be a child is to discover and learn and if fear inhibits this process, then a lot of the joy in being a child is lost.    On the other hand, there are children who are naturally timid and shy and if these personality traits do not interfere with day to day activities like playing with friends, going to school and getting a good nights sleep, then you are probably not dealing with a potential anxiety disorder.

Children's fears are age-specific, which means that there are stages most kids go through. For example, until the age of 2, loud noises, strangers and being separated from their parents will make infants and toddlers afraid. Between 3 and 6 years of age, the imagination plays a major role with ghosts, monsters, the dark and natural phenomenon like thunder and floods. From the age of 7 until mid-adolescence, fear of doing badly at school, death, injury, bad health and the unpredictability of natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes are prevalent.

Children can be affected by seven types of anxiety disorders.

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder is diagnosed when the child worries excessively about a broad range of things including things they have said and done, upcoming events, family and school. They worry to such an extent that they become restless, are irritable, tired and have difficulty concentrating. They may be unable to sleep.
  • Panic Disorder is present when the child has recurring panic attacks and is anxious and fearful about having them. Avoidance behaviour is one consequence.
  • Separation Anxiety Disorder occurs mostly with younger children who are anxious at being separated from their primary caregiver. They child worries about what will become of them in the caregiver's absence or what might happen to the caregiver.
  • Specific Phobias occur in response to such things as the dark, spiders, bees and dogs. The fear is present to the extent that normal activities are disrupted or impossible.
  • Social Phobia is more common amongst adolescents who dread humiliation in public places to such an extent that they avoid social situations.
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder occurs when obsessions or intrusive thoughts and compulsions or repetitive behaviours interfere with daily activities. Compulsions are usually the result of the child trying to drown out unacceptable thoughts with rituals like washing their hands repeatedly.
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder forms as the result of trauma such as the death of a loved one, an accident or divorce. The child becomes over-anxious at the lack of control they had over events and worries about future occurrences.

Anxiety Disorders do react well to treatment but the difficulty with children is that they do not know themselves that what they feel is not felt by all children. Therefore, it is up to the caregivers to recognize the problem and seek treatment for the child.

Baby Shower Cake Ideas

Organizing a baby shower celebration can be a daunting task.  You need to define the list of guests.  You need to produce a theme, a date and a place,  print and send the invitations, and then plan the event itself.

For the shower, you will consider what decorations to use, what games or entertainment to have, what baby shower favors to give, and, what to serve.

Through the baby shower, the table centerpiece is many normally a shower cake.  Shower cakes are usually unique designs, rather than "off the shelf" generic cake designs.

Preordering the baby shower cake from a commercial bakery will also be fine as long as you give enough time for the cake to be prepared and given that the bakery is able to meet your needs in terms of how the cake should look.

Though, if you have several baking skills, or if you can follow directions from cookbooks well, it is ideal to prepare the cake yourself.  You can use your creativity for the design and you can generally ask for assist from friends.  Preparing it by yourself will also save quite a bit of money.

To prepare the shower cake, check online for tried and tested recipes, flavors and designs.

Typically, the designs and shapes of baby shower cakes look like nursery items.  Good examples are flowers, birds, butterflies, baby-shaped, toys and other things associated with infants.  The virtually all common icing colors are yellow, pink, blue, green and white.

One smart idea for the shower cake is to use diapers.  That’s right – diapers.  Of course, this cake cannot be eaten; it's merely ornamental.  However, the mom will absolutely appreciate it if there is already a stack of diapers prepared for the baby.

To prepare a diaper cake, all you need to do is very carefully stack rolled diapers into numerous levels (having three tiers is suggested).  You may use laces and ribbons to retain the diapers in place.  However, make sure that you did not tie the diapers too tightly together to keep them from becoming deformed.

The diaper cake can also be placed as a table focal point.  If you still want to have a real cake for the shower, you can bake or order a basic cake from a bakery.

Obviously, there is more to baby shower food than just a cake.  Virtually all of the time, snacks, tea, desserts and punches are served.  If you have male guests, barbecued or grilled food may be desirable. The men can bond and have some conversations while minding the grills.  In this way, everybody can take part in the special event for the expectant mother.

Relax Your Baby When Colic Hits

by Nancy Newell

You have your baby in your arms, she is changed, cleaned and fed, but still crying. This is probably one of the times when you feel frustrated and unable to understand what is going on. The baby is crying and suffering and you cannot do something to make her feel better.

The first thing you should check is if the baby needs to be fed, if the baby is thirsty or if there is something else that causes discomfort. This can be something minor like the clothes being too tight or an eyelash that is in the eye. See that the baby has no apparent reason for crying. Then check if the baby has any signs of illness. Fever, sweat or signs of nervousness might mean that the baby has a cold. If everything seems fin, the baby might have a colic hit. In this case, you should hold the baby in your arms and try to relax her. Reduce anything irritating in the room like bright lights or loud noises. If the baby is scared of something or dislikes company, move to a room that you can be alone and calm the baby down. Make sure the baby understands your presence through cuddling and hearing your voice.

Colic has a way to appear and a pattern that could become evident to you if you notice things. If you breast feed the baby, avoid food that can be irritating as onions, spices, strawberries and grapes. There are also other foods that can be irritating so ask for a list from your doctor. Check if the baby has a minor allergy to milk.

The one thing to do however is to hold the baby in your arms. There are studies that show that babies that are being held several hours a day don't have colic because the presence of the mother reassures them and they develop better. Hold the baby and read a story to allow the baby to hear your voice at a steady pace. Put on some soft music and relax. If your baby likes walks, try to walk inside the room until the baby stops crying.

If your baby has colic, making simple lifestyle changes can help you cope with this situation. Spend time with the baby and avoid letting other people taking care of the baby. Babies that have colic suffer from lack of contact to their parents. Make sure the baby sees you and hears your voice. Hold the baby any time you can. Colic will be reduced if you keep your environment calm and relaxed.
